Grunge is seen as a darker aesthetic that originally had roots in hard rock music from Seattle. Grunge was first started in the 80's by Green River's album Come on Down and then popularized in the 90's by Nirvana's Nevermind
album, it started off as anti-consumerism movement but would lose it's anti-consumerism sometime in the late 90's.
When people think of the grunge aesthetic, what often comes to mind is dirty and depressing imagery that shows the more hopelessness parts of society.
As of late though, Grunge's style has been depeicted with vinyl records, glitches, the color black, and cigarettes with the main colors used being black, grey, brown, red, green, and blue.
